As we navigate life, we naturally develop ways of coping with challenges, stress, and difficult experiences. We also adopt behaviours that help us relax, distract ourselves, or to find pleasure and enjoyment.

Sometimes, these coping strategies or lifestyle choices can begin to cause problems of their own. What once felt helpful may start to have a negative impact on our wellbeing, relationships, work, or sense of self.

Couples consultations provide a safe and supportive space for you and your partner to explore the impact of the problem behaviour and improve coping and communication, with a clear focus on shared treatment goals.

SBNT Family Sessions

Social Behaviour & Network Therapy:

I work with families or significant others to reflect on and  understand their coping and communication styles. When someone is struggling, everyone around them tends to adapt in order to manage worry, fear, frustration, or a desire to help. These responses usually come from a place of care and good intention — for example, trying to protect, rescue, push, avoid conflict, or keep the peace.

Over time, though, these patterns can become quite fixed and may unintentionally maintain the situation rather than support change. This isn’t about fault or blame; it’s about gently noticing what each person does when things feel difficult, how messages are sent and received, and whether those approaches are still serving the goal you all want.

For this kind of work to be effective, it’s important that everyone is clear about the overall aim — what “progress” or “things improving” would actually look like. Having shared goals makes it easier to communicate more clearly, set appropriate boundaries, and respond in ways that support change rather than react to ongoing stress.
